Deep wrinkles, sagging skin and the so-called bags under the eyes take away the youthful glow from the look. Eyelid surgery allows you to improve their appearance, and thus rejuvenate the eyes. The treatment may involve the upper eyelids, lower eyelids or both.
The upper eyelids are most often operated on, because they are the area where the most visible excess of loose, stretched or not well wrinkled skin is. In extreme cases, sagging skin may limit the field of view. In such cases, blepharoplasty offers both aesthetic and functional benefits. In the case of lower eyelids, the most common indications for surgery are the so-called bags under the eyes, i.e. the fat that protrudes from the eye socket.
The causes of upper eyelid drooping include:
Dropping of the lower eyelids is mainly related to:
It can also be influenced by environmental factors such as working in poor lighting or prolonged computer use.
The contraindications for blepharoplasty are:
Eyelid surgery is performed under local or short-term intravenous anesthesia. In the case of upper eyelid surgery, the incision is made in the eyelid fold – thanks to which the scar will remain invisible when the eyes are open (after a few weeks it will fade and become practically imperceptible). The surgeon removes the redundant skin fragment and any excess fat.
In the case of correction in the area of the lower eyelid, the cut is made under the lash line. An unnecessary part of the skin is cut out, then the doctor models the orbital fat and corrects the position of the circular muscle of the eye, then gently sutures. Depending on the extent and complexity of the defect, the procedure takes from 45 minutes to 2 hours. The patient may leave the clinic a few hours after the procedure.
A treatment at the Medical Clinic Podhale Art in Zakopane is always preceded by a consultation with a doctor, during which a medical interview is conducted with the patient, his expectations as well as the plan and scope of the procedure are discussed. After that, an appointment is made for the operation and the question of post-operative care is discussed.
Before the procedure, the following tests should be performed:
One month before the surgery, you should give up smoking in order to avoid the risk of healing disorders or potential infection. For about 2 weeks before the procedure, you should not take medications containing salicylic acid (anti-inflammatory and painkillers, e.g. Aspirin, Polopyrin), Ibuprofen, Paracetamol, etc., because they prolong the blood clotting time, which increases the risk of bleeding during the procedure.
After the procedure, follow the doctor’s instructions. He will definitely recommend the use of cooling compresses, and a gentle massage in the case of lower eyelid correction. The wound is treated with an antibiotic ointment and a preparation ensuring optimal healing and minimizing scarring (with ceramides and fatty acids). You may feel a little pain that does not usually require painkillers. The effect to be reckoned with is temporary bruising and swelling of the eyelids and the area around the eyes.
The sutures are removed 4-5 days after the procedure, while you can usually return to work after 7-10 days in the case of plastic surgery of the upper eyelid and after two weeks in the case of the lower eyelid. The final effect can usually be assessed after 3–6 months, depending on the scope of the procedure.
