Polycystic ovary syndrome

Endocrinology Zakopane – Specialist outpatient clinics Medical Clinic Podhale Art. Welcome!

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), also known as Stein-Leventhal syndrome, is the most common hormone secretion disorder. Women with polycystic ovary syndrome have ovarian hyperandrogenism. In addition to fertility problems; excessive hair; acne and androgenetic alopecia, it leads to the development of abdominal obesity and its unfavorable metabolic consequences.

In addition, women with this disease have hereditary insulin resistance and associated hyperinsulinemia, which can lead to the development of atherosclerosis, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes. These diseases, in turn, contribute to cardiovascular disease.

Hormonal imbalances prevent eggs from maturing or being released into the fallopian tube during ovulation. The ovarian follicles that surround the eggs die and turn into small cysts. At the Medical Clinic Podhale Art gynecology clinic in Zakopane, we deal with comprehensive diagnostics and treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome.

Symptoms

Symptoms typical of this disease include:

  • irregular or limited menstrual cycles (less than 8 per year),
  • rare or no ovulations,
  • hirsutism (excessive male hair) – affects up to 70 percent. women with PCOS,
  • acne (on the face, back, chest),
  • hyperandrogenism (excess of androgens, confirmed by laboratory tests),
  • polycystic ovaries on the ultrasound image.

One of the most troublesome symptoms and lowering the comfort of life is hirsutism, i.e. excessive male hair growth, which appears around the face, nipples, and the lumbosacral area.

Treatment

The management of polycystic ovary syndrome depends on whether the patient is planning a pregnancy in the near future or not. Her mental state is also of great importance. In addition to striving to achieve hormonal stabilization or getting pregnant, you should make sure that the woman accepts her appearance. This can be achieved, among others thanks to the stabilization of body weight at the appropriate level and reduction of excessive hair. It should be remembered that being overweight greatly increases the clinical symptoms of the syndrome.

Therefore, reducing excess weight is extremely important in women with PCOS. In the first place, they should be advised to lose weight and increase physical activity. It turns out that losing weight by 5 percent. and physical exercise give effects similar to pharmacological treatment – in patients with ovulation disorders, ovulation cycles return.

However, it is worth remembering that due to the hormonal situation it is difficult for women with PCOS to get even 5% weight reduction. Pharmacological treatment is often included in the therapy. Birth control pills and metformin (a medicine for diabetes) can improve the hormonal imbalance and thus reduce the symptoms of the disease.

We cordially invite you to the gynecological clinic of the Medical Clinic Podhale Art in Zakopane, where the polycystic ovary syndrome is diagnosed and treated by experienced specialists.
