Dental X-ray

Dental X-ray Zakopane – at Medical Clinic Podhale Art. We cordially invite you!

Dental X-ray, also called x-ray, is the basis for diagnostics and dental treatment. It is relatively non-invasive and painless, and taking into account the mapping of tooth and bone tissues, it can show changes that cannot be seen with the naked eye.

They are used e.g. in implantology, orthodontics, conservative dentistry and prosthetic treatment.

A doctor from the Dental Center at Medical Clinic Podhale Art in Zakopane may order an X-ray examination, e.g. in order to determine the degree of caries and the condition of the gums, check the position of wisdom teeth or diagnose a tooth before root canal treatment. Thanks to X-ray images, it is also possible to detect other abnormalities in the oral cavity, i.e. inflammations, abscesses or neoplastic changes. This allows you to properly assess the condition of the teeth and bone tissues, and thus plan treatment.

What does a dental X-ray look like and what are its types?

The X-ray of the teeth is a short examination, and the taking of the picture itself takes several dozen seconds. Due to the technique of taking pictures, we can divide them into intraoral and extraoral. Intraoral involves placing a small detector in the patient’s mouth. In this way, 1-4 teeth can be X-rayed. This type of examination includes spot X-rays and bitewing X-rays. On the other hand, extraoral images include cephalometric, panoramic and 3D tomographic images.

Types of X-ray examinations:

  • spot X-ray,
  • pantomography,
  • cephalography (cephalometry),
  • computed tomography.
Spot photo

This is the image most often taken in dental diagnostics. Spot x-rays are used to examine single teeth. Therefore, it helps to detect caries, check how the root canals are arranged and determine whether there are changes that would require endodontic treatment. The picture usually shows 3-4 teeth, their roots, sockets, crowns and tissues.

Orthopantomographic photo (OPG)

It is nothing more than a panoramic photo, and more precisely, an overview photo of all teeth, jaw, jaw and temporomandibular joints. It is a basic X-ray examination in dentistry, helpful in diagnosing caries, detecting abnormalities within the periodontium and tooth roots, developmental defects, and supernumerary teeth. They are performed in a sitting or standing position, and the pantomogram head rotates around the patient’s head, recording the image.

Cephalometric image

The cephalometric photo is taken in profile. In addition to the teeth, it also shows the bones of the skull, and on its basis it is possible to analyze facial features. For this reason, cephalography is performed as part of planning orthodontic treatment, before placing braces on the teeth.

Bitwing photo

This type of images allows you to assess the tangential walls of the adjacent teeth of the upper and lower arch, because only the tooth crowns are visible on it. These types of photos are relatively rare.

Cone-beam tomography (CBTC study)

It is a 40-second extraoral 3D computer examination that enables the most precise imaging of the oral cavity and the detection of even small changes. Due to the high image accuracy, tomography is very useful in planning complex procedures. Moreover, it is invaluable in dental implantology, because it allows for a perfect fit of the implant, which translates into the final effect of the treatment.
