Skin biopsy

Skin biopsy – Medical Clinic Podhale Art Zakopane. You’re welcome!

A skin biopsy is performed under local anesthesia. The skin is temporarily anesthetized with a lidocaine-based preparation or frozen. Before the procedure, the doctor from the Medical Clinic Podhale Art in Zakopane conducts an interview, during which he should be informed about all medications taken and current diseases, including blood clotting disorders.

The course of the study

The skin section is taken with a special disposable die with a diameter of 2 to 5 mm. It looks like a syringe. The die is placed perpendicular to the skin surface and slowly rotated. In this way, a small piece of tissue is collected and sent for examination. During the collection of the skin section, the Patient may lie down or sit up, depending on the area under examination. The cutout should include not only a fragment of the lesion on the skin, but also the surrounding healthy tissue. Immediately after taking it, it is placed in a special fixative solution that prevents it from drying out.

After the procedure, sutures are usually not required, a special dressing is enough to stop the bleeding.

The histopathological result is issued after about 10–14 days. A skin biopsy is a completely safe procedure. Rarely, there are any complications after it is performed. Sometimes a hematoma is formed at the site where the tissue is collected, but it is quickly absorbed by the body.

A skin biopsy takes a few minutes on average and does not require any special preparation. Moreover, after carrying it out, the Patient can immediately return to daily activities. More importantly – the result of the biopsy and proper diagnosis of the disease is the basis for the implementation of appropriate surgical or pharmacological treatment.

Indications

The indications for a skin biopsy are, for example:

  • suspicion of skin cancer,
  • precancerous skin conditions,
  • connective tissue diseases (including systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma),
  • inflammatory skin diseases,
  • changes on the oral mucosa,
  • changes on the genital mucosa,
  • suspected cutaneous lymphoma,
  • psoriasis.
Contraindications

There are also some contraindications for this test. It is not performed on necrotic tissue, as well as on the skin, which is covered with ulcers and scabs. This is due to the fact that such tissue fragments do not allow for the correct diagnosis of a possible disease. Contraindication is also decompensated blood coagulation disorders.

Recommendations after surgery

Skin biopsy is relatively safe, but possible complications that may occur after the specimen is collected are wound infection and / or hematoma. In order to avoid this, physical effort should be limited for some time (as indicated by the doctor) after the procedure, and the examined area should be protected against soaking or potential trauma until the dressing is removed and the area is healed.

The effectiveness of the biopsy is assessed very highly, so it is worth performing it. The results of the research make it much easier to determine the type of disease, as well as the degree of malignancy of the cancer. They are also an indispensable source of information for a doctor, so that he can choose and apply the most effective method of treatment in a given case.
