Contact and allergic eczema

Eczema on the face, treatment – Medical Clinic Podhale Art. We cordially invite you!

Characteristic for contact eczema is the absence of an underlying immune response, unlike allergic contact dermatitis. Contact dermatitis can occur even without prior allergy to a specific substance, when first exposed to it.

The occurrence of irritation skin lesions is related to the duration and dose of the irritating substance. This is not the case with allergies. Another characteristic and distinguishing feature from allergic contact dermatitis is the presence of skin lesions only at the point of contact of a given factor with the skin. For example, buckles in a belt or a metal earring. In allergy, the lesions may also be present in other places. However, since irritants make the skin more sensitive to all other components, both conditions can coexist. Experienced dermatologists from the Medical Clinic Podhale Art in Zakopane will surely diagnose the problem and apply effective treatment.

Irritating and toxic factors

The list of irritating and toxic factors in the environment is very long. Chemicals can irritate the skin, including cosmetics or perfumes, detergents, paints, varnishes, dusts, organic solvents, alkalis, acids, UV radiation, ionizing, laser, heat, cold. In some people who have skin lesions, the so-called occupational eczema. It is associated with an allergy to harmful substances from the above-mentioned groups present at work. Allergens can also be substances found in clothes or footwear (e.g. wool, rubber) and metals such as nickel. It also happens that eczema appears under the influence of ultraviolet radiation, which is simply sunlight.

Contact eczema is caused by contact with an allergen or an irritating substance. It then causes itchy, scaly skin lesions to form on the body.

Symptoms

Among the symptoms, apart from the already mentioned itching and peeling of the skin, one can mention, among others: erythema, edema, erosions, appearance of vesicles and papules. They usually occur where the body comes into contact with the allergenic agent, but can also occur throughout the body. The skin is dry, thickened, often cracks (e.g. on the hands), causing pain – there are clearly visible furrows resembling the bark of wood.

Treatment of contact eczema

In the treatment of contact eczema, it is of course important to avoid substances or factors that cause irritation. With very severe symptoms, such as erythema, swelling, oozing, and itching, the doctor may even use strong anti-inflammatory drugs in the form of topical creams or ointments with glucocorticosteroids. Generally steroid drugs, such as tablets or injections, are also used very rarely. Supportive measures can be used with saline soaps, zinc creams and, if necessary, local and general antibiotics. In therapy, especially in the presence of pruritus, antihistamines are also used.

It is important to take care of the proper level of skin lubrication and hydration. If the changes were not caused by sunlight, you can use therapeutic skin irradiation. Treatment is usually effective and significantly improves the appearance of the skin.
